The Four Rules of Really Great Bedroom Design
- September 7, 2016 by The Find in Design Dilemma,Inspiration
If your bedroom is a dumping ground for laundry, shoes and more laundry, read this. A bedroom should be a sanctuary, and you’re more likely to treat it that way – and far more likely to enjoy it – if you take some time to decorate it. Here are four rules of really great bedroom design.
Rule #1: Cut the Clutter
First things first. Clutter does not belong in your bedroom. Picture walking into a beautiful, luxurious hotel room. It’s serene, right? Instantly soothing. And that’s because there’s no clutter. Just a welcoming bed, a cozy seat, simple decor. You can kick your bedroom clutter to the curb (or at the very least, banish it to another spot in the house) any number of ways:
- Making it out of sight, out of mind under the bed or in the closet
- Corralling it all with decor items like buckets, trays, baskets and bins
Reducing clutter is the first step to creating a relaxing space. And it sets the stage for more rules.
Rule #2: Remember the Focus
In a bedroom, the bed is the focal point. It’s the biggest piece in the space, and it takes up prime real estate – everything is arranged around it. And that means that the style of the bed matters. It sets the tone for the entire room. What is your bed saying? Is it a modern, minimalist platform? Is it formal or romantic, a dreamy canopy?
You can highlight a really beautiful bed frame by keeping additional elements to a minimum, or play up the entire bed area with framing lights on either side, area rugs beneath, artwork on the headboard wall, even a feature wall. Whatever you do, remember to play up the focus. And the focus is the bed.
Rule #3: Don’t Forget Bedding Decor
One of the easiest ways to decorate the bedroom is with really great bedding. Sheets, blankets and pillows can create all kinds of wonderful looks for the bedroom – just think of the beautiful images in bedding catalogues! They make you want to dive right in, and you can recreate that same feeling in your own bedroom.
You might try color blocks – mixing solid colors or shades of a single color – for a unifying, cozy look. Keep things simple and go Scandinavian with neutral shades that highlight beautiful textures and high-quality fabrics.
Rule #4: Consider Light & Color
Light colors on the walls will make the bedroom feel bright and airy. Darker colors can create a sense of cozy intimacy. If you use neutral colors – whites, grays, taupes – bring color into the space with decor, bedding and area rugs. This is a versatile option, because you can change up the color scheme just by changing out these pieces. If you opt for a bolder color, make sure your other pieces work well with it.
Lighting is key. Springing for effective ceiling lighting is never a bad decision, but don’t neglect table and wall lamps either. Dimmer switches for overhead lighting are wonderful in a bedroom. It’s a space where you’ll need the lights to be bright at times and low at others.
