- August 11, 2015 by The Find in Design Dilemma,Furniture Buying Tips
A living room, den or great room can look a little undone without a coffee table. These multipurpose pieces not only complete the look of these living spaces, they’re functional too. You’ll use them for storage and display and yes, even actual cups of coffee. So how do you find the right coffee table for your space? First, come to The Find this Thursday, Friday and Saturday to take advantage of the final week of our customer appreciation event. All coffee tables are 10% off, and we’re matching all purchases with a 10% donation to the local chapter of the JDRF. Every purchase will earn you a raffle ticket into our giveaway. You could win a $500 gift card to The Find and other great prizes.
To zero in on the perfect coffee table, consider two elements – size and style. Budget dictates all, of course, so be aware that you can spend a little or a lot on a coffee table. Have an idea of what you want to spend (and how high you’ll splurge) before you begin your search.
Step 1 – Determine Size, Shape and Scale
Your room and lifestyle will help you narrow your choices when it comes to a coffee table’s size and shape. Round or oval tables are great choices if you have small children or pets. Go with something smaller if you have a smaller space, and try to allow for at least 30 inches of space between a coffee table and another piece like a entertainment console if you want room to walk.
Height is just as important as length and width. Standard design rules dictate that a coffee table should be no lower than one to two inches from the seat of your couch. Have a taller couch? Look for a taller coffee table, something 20 to 21 inches high.
Don’t pair a dainty, romantic chair with a clunky, oversized table. Contrast can be fun, but the way to pull it off is by paying attention to scale. You can mix and match patterns and even styles if you make sure that the visual weight of all these pieces is in harmony.
Step 2 – Consider Style
There are all kinds of materials used for coffee tables – go industrial with something sleek and metal, sophisticated with a mix of glass and steel, casual with classic woods or rustic with knottier wood. The material and shape will affect the overall style. Are you going for something formal, vintage, contemporary or classic? Take a look at your space to get an idea of your design theme and find something that will complement it.
